The dredging pump is a highly important component in various industries, particularly in applications that involve the extraction of sediment, slurry, or other materials from bodies of water. One of the key factors that contribute to the effectiveness and longevity of a dredging pump is the material used in its construction. Different materials offer varying degrees of wear resistance, with cast iron being a commonly used option.
1. Common casting materials of dredging pump
1.1 Cast iron material
Cast iron is a general term for alloys that are primarily composed of iron, carbon, and silicon. Industrial cast iron typically contains around 2.5% to 3.5% carbon. In cast iron, carbon exists predominantly in the form of graphite, although it can also be present as cementite. In addition to carbon, cast iron also contains about 1% to 3% silicon, along with trace amounts of other elements such as manganese, phosphorus, and sulfur. It’s worth noting that cast iron can be further categorized into two main types: gray cast iron and ductile iron.
1.2 Gray cast iron material
Gray cast iron exhibits several desirable properties that make it suitable for certain applications. It has a relatively low melting point, typically ranging from 1145 to 1250 °C, which makes it easier to cast. During solidification, gray cast iron experiences minimal shrinkage, resulting in a more dimensionally stable end product. In terms of mechanical properties, gray cast iron demonstrates compressive strength and hardness levels that are comparable to carbon steel. Additionally, it possesses good shock absorption capabilities. The presence of flake graphite within the microstructure of gray cast iron enhances its wear resistance, making it well-suited for applications where durability is crucial. Moreover, gray cast iron exhibits favorable casting and machining characteristics, facilitating the manufacturing process.
1.3 Ductile iron material
Ductile iron, also known as nodular cast iron, is derived from the spheroidization of gray cast iron. This process involves the addition of certain elements to the molten iron, resulting in the formation of spherical graphite structures. Ductile iron is characterized by a silver-gray fracture surface, with the majority or all of the carbon existing in the form of free spherical graphite. Compared to ordinary gray cast iron, ductile iron offers superior strength, improved toughness, and enhanced plasticity. These properties make it highly desirable in applications where increased mechanical performance and resilience are required.
When it comes to dredging pumps, the choice of material is crucial due to the demanding nature of their operation. The pump components that come into direct contact with abrasive materials, such as the impeller and casing, need to withstand high levels of wear. Cast iron, with its inherent wear resistance, is often employed in the construction of these parts. It provides a balance between durability and cost-effectiveness, making it a popular choice for many dredging pump manufacturers.

2.Other Materials of dredging pump
2.1 Cast steel material
Cast steel material is cast steel with carbon as the main alloying element and a small amount of other elements. Cast carbon steel can be divided into cast low carbon steel, cast medium carbon steel and cast high carbon steel. The carbon content of cast low carbon steel is less than 0.25%, the carbon content of cast medium carbon steel is between 0.25% and 0.60%, and the carbon content of cast high carbon steel is between 0.6% and 3.0%.
The strength and hardness of cast carbon steel increase with the increase of carbon content. Cast carbon steel has several advantages: lower production cost, higher strength, better toughness and stronger plasticity.
2.2 High chromium alloy steel
High chromium alloy steel refers to alloy steel with a chromium content of more than 10%. High chromium alloy steel generally has high wear resistance, high compressive strength, high surface hardness after hardening, good hardenability, good stability when hardened, and good temper softening resistance.
Different materials exhibit different physical properties after casting. In terms of hardness and wear resistance, high-chromium alloy materials are the most wear-resistant, followed by cast steel materials, and cast iron materials are poor. The sand suction pump flow parts produced by our factory are mainly made of high-chromium alloy material, the chromium content reaches 28%, and the Leeb hardness is about 65. At the same time, trace elements such as manganese and molybdenum are added in the casting process to increase the flexibility of the casting. It has better toughness while emphasizing hardness, making it less likely to break during use.
3. Summary
Dredging pumps are very important components in various industries, especially in applications involving the extraction of sediment, slurry or other materials from bodies of water. The material of construction of a dredging pump has a significant impact on its effectiveness and longevity, with cast iron being a common choice. In addition, there are other materials that can be used for dredging pumps, such as cast steel materials and high-chromium alloy steel. Cast steel materials have high strength, good toughness and plasticity, and their hardness and wear resistance are higher than cast iron materials. High chromium alloy steel has high wear resistance, high compressive strength and hardness, making it suitable for applications requiring a high degree of wear resistance.
In general, based on specific application needs and performance requirements, various factors need to be considered when selecting materials for dredging pumps, including wear resistance, strength, toughness, processing performance and cost.
