1. What is a Horizontal Sand Pump?
A horizontal sand pump is renowned for its simplicity of operation, environmental friendliness, energy efficiency, high performance, and durability. It is especially suitable for unloading sand from transport ships. Upon the arrival of sand at a local area via a transport ship, workers usually utilize high-pressure water guns to dislodge the sand. Following this, a horizontal sand pump is employed to transport the resulting high-concentration mixture of sand and water to its intended destination.

2. How to Choose a Horizontal Sand Pump?
In Jiaxing city, sand mining faced stringent government regulations due to environmental concerns. Nevertheless, the demand for sand and gravel for construction remained high, prompting the need to source these materials from elsewhere. Initially considering conveyer belts or small sand pumps for unloading, it became evident that these methods were inefficient, with limited conveying distances, frequent equipment damage, and high costs. In response to customer requirements and after measuring the sand transport ship, the technical team at Tai’an Ocean Pump Co., Ltd. (referred to as Ocean Pump) recommended the 350PNS-35 horizontal sand pump for sand unloading.
On April 10, 2018, customers from Jiaxing approached Ocean Pump with specific construction needs: fast sand unloading speeds, 6-barrel water guns, and conveying distances ranging from 600m to 1300m. Ocean Pump’s engineers proposed a sand unloading plan involving the installation of a new ship equipped with a 350PNS-35 horizontal sand pump and a 350s44 high-pressure water pump within the ship’s hull. Hydraulic operation rods were utilized to manipulate the high-pressure water gun and sand suction hose, streamlining the sand unloading process. This method, developed collaboratively by Ocean Pump, Yancheng, and Xinghua Shipyard, has been successfully implemented in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and the Huangpu River area.

After reviewing the proposed plan, customers voiced concerns regarding potential cost escalations and construction delays. They expressed a preference for unloading sand directly at the dock. To address this, Ocean Pump’s technical department conducted construction simulations and proposed a solution involving placing a horizontal sand pump on the dock and utilizing handheld high-pressure water guns to dislodge the sand. However, several critical operational considerations arose:
Firstly, it’s imperative to manage the height of the horizontal sand pump meticulously to avoid impacting suction, causing cavitation, or increasing resistance due to air in the suction pump body and pipeline. Recommendations included achieving backflow or maintaining a parallel water level.
In constrained work site conditions, it’s essential to ensure that the sand pump machine’s placement does not dip below the water level. Operating the sand suction pump 2-3m higher than the water level, after injecting water into the pump body, remained feasible. Water injection methods included installing a bottom valve on the suction hose or utilizing a vacuum pump. The latter required a gate valve at the exit for ease of operation.
When equipping power and pipelines, actual work site conditions must be considered. While the rated power of the 350PNS-35 horizontal sand pump is 200 kW, an 8-pole, 220 kW motor was recommended due to the high concentration of sand unloading and long discharge distances. Pipeline diameters of 315mm or 377mm were deemed suitable, providing customers with flexibility based on budget considerations.
Following pre-communication, the customer selected the 350PNS-35 horizontal sand pump scheme with an SK-0.2/2.2 kW vacuum pump, readily available in stock. As a result, the sand pumping equipment was promptly assembled and delivered to the work site.
3. What are the parameters of a sand pump?
