1. Overview of Submersible Slurry Pumps
A submersible slurry pump is a specialized fluid machinery with an integrated motor and pump body, designed to work completely submerged underwater. Its core function is to transport solid-liquid mixed media containing solid particles, suitable for working conditions that are difficult for ordinary slurry pumps to reach, such as underwater and deep foundation pits. It converts electrical energy into the kinetic and potential energy of the medium by means of centrifugal force, and is widely used in industries such as mining, power plants, dredging, metallurgy, and environmental protection.
As a sub-category of slurry pumps, it inherits the advantages of wear resistance and corrosion resistance. It is divided into vertical and horizontal types by structure, and mining, dredging types by application. Compared with ordinary slurry pumps, it does not require complex bases and suction pipelines. Its core structure includes a submersible motor, impeller, sealing device, stirring impeller and control protection system, with a compact structure, convenient installation, no limitation by suction lift, and more thorough slag suction.

2. Working Principle of Submersible Slurry Pumps
Submersible slurry pumps work based on the principle of centrifugal force and can start quickly without priming. After being submerged underwater, the motor drives the impeller to rotate at high speed, and the blades push the solid-liquid medium to rotate synchronously. Under the action of centrifugal force, the medium is thrown away from the impeller and enters the volute pump casing. In the pump casing, the expansion of the flow channel slows down the medium, converting part of the kinetic energy into static pressure energy, and finally discharges it from the outlet at high pressure.
A vacuum is formed at the center of the impeller due to the medium being thrown out, and the surrounding medium is continuously supplemented under the action of gravity and liquid pressure to achieve continuous transportation. The stirring impeller added at the bottom can stir the sediment deposited at the bottom of the water into a transportable mixture, realizing high-concentration transportation without auxiliary devices and greatly improving work efficiency.
3. Structural Characteristics of Submersible Slurry Pumps
To meet the needs of underwater operations, submersible slurry pumps have special designs in wear resistance, sealing and protection. The core structural characteristics are as follows:
3.1 Integrated Pump Body and Motor Structure
It adopts a dry-type structure with coaxial integration of motor and pump body. The motor is sealed in a waterproof shell to prevent water and solid particles from invading. The pump body has a double-layer wear-resistant structure, with the outer layer being pressure-resistant and the inner layer being a high-chromium alloy or rubber bushing. The water outlet can be installed by rotating at 45° intervals, with small volume, light weight, and convenient movement and management.
3.2 Impeller and Stirring Impeller Design
The impeller adopts a semi-closed three-piece curved vane structure, made of Cr28 high-chromium alloy or malleable cast iron, with high strength and wear resistance. It is equipped with back vanes to reduce backflow erosion. The bottom stirring impeller can stir the sediment at the bottom of the water to avoid blockage. The impeller flow line adopts involute or logarithmic spiral, with 3 to 5 vanes, balancing efficiency and anti-clogging ability.
3.3 Sealing and Protection Structure
It adopts a dual protection of “mechanical seal + auxiliary impeller seal”. The mechanical seal is made of hard alloy, and the auxiliary impeller resists liquid leakage. Some high-end models adopt three-stage series sealing, which can operate continuously for more than 8000 hours. The motor is equipped with multiple protections such as water ingress, overheating and overload, and will automatically shut down in case of abnormalities to ensure stable operation under harsh working conditions.
3.4 Bearing Structure
The bearing is a compact cylindrical structure, easy to maintain. It uses special waterproof grease to prevent rust and jamming. The design has sufficient safety factor to adapt to underwater high-pressure and vibration working conditions and reduce failures.

4. Main Uses of Submersible Slurry Pumps
With the advantages of underwater operation, no suction lift and anti-clogging, submersible slurry pumps are widely used in many industries. The core scenarios are as follows:
4.1 Mining Industry
Accounting for more than 70% of the total usage, it is used for underground drainage, pulp and tailings transportation. It can be directly submerged into underground pulp for transportation, simplifying the process. The wear-resistant and sealed design extends the service life and adapts to harsh underground working conditions.
4.2 Power Industry
In thermal power plants, it is used for ash slurry transportation and desulfurization slurry transportation. It can be directly submerged into the ash pool for operation to avoid blockage. The corrosion-resistant material is suitable for corrosive media, and it is also called “underwater ash pump”.
4.3 Dredging Industry
It is suitable for dredging of rivers, lakes and ports. The stirring impeller stirs the sludge before transportation, with high work efficiency and no damage to the environment. It is also called “submersible sand pump” in seawater sand extraction.
4.4 Other Industries
In the coal washing industry, it is used to transport coal slurry containing gangue, with excellent anti-clogging design; in environmental protection, chemical and other industries, it is used to transport sewage, waste residue and corrosive media; in construction projects, it is used for deep foundation pit drainage, etc.
5. Use and Maintenance of Submersible Slurry Pumps
5.1 Correct Selection
Select the model according to underwater depth, medium characteristics, flow rate and head. For highly abrasive media, select high-chromium alloy impellers; for large-particle media, select large-flow channel models to avoid overload operation and improve equipment durability.
5.2 Common Faults and Handling
If the pump does not rotate, check the motor seal, circuit and impeller blockage; if the flow rate is insufficient, replace the worn impeller and clean the pipeline; if there is vibration and noise, adjust the medium concentration and correct the impeller balance; if the motor is overheated/water enters, check the load and seals; if the pump body leaks, replace the seals or shaft sleeve.
5.3 Maintenance
Regularly check the flow-through parts and sealing devices, and replace worn parts; maintain the bearings with special waterproof grease; check the waterproof performance before operation, and dry and store it when not in use for a long time; operate standardizedly, prohibit dry operation, and prepare sufficient wearing parts.
