1.10-inch cutter suction dredger as a solution to iron ore mining in the Yenisei River Basin
The Yenisei River Basin is the largest iron ore-rich area in Russia, releasing about 230 million tons of iron-containing sand resources during the thawing period from May to September each year. Traditional sand mining ships can still maintain operations in shallow waters, but encounter three major technical bottlenecks in the 12-meter deep water area of the main river:
1.1 Geological complex problem:
basement basalt + 20cm gravel layer (accounting for 35%) + high viscosity frozen clay (plasticity index>17) form a “natural armor layer”
1.2 Extreme cold operation and maintenance dilemma:
-45℃ low temperature causes hydraulic oil solidification, steel embrittlement, and mechanical failure rate surges by 300%
1.3. Economic bottleneck:
diesel-powered equipment has an energy consumption cost of $2.17 per ton of sand, and the magnetic separation recovery rate is only 72%
In 2020, Russian customers introduced Tai’an Ocean pump company’s 8-inch jet sand pumping ship, which achieved 800m³/day in 5-meter shallow waters, with good results.
When the Siberian rivers thawed, the river sand rich in iron ore in the 12-meter deep water area could be mined, but when it was pushed to the deep water area of the main channel, gravel blocked the pump body and the pump was shut down for an average of 3 hours a day. Clay wrapped iron sand caused 40% loss of magnetic separation, and the mining efficiency plummeted by 60%. This is not only a failure of equipment, but also exposes the systematic incompatibility of traditional processes with complex formations. To this end, we developed a 10-inch pump cutter suction sand pumping ship as a solution. This is not only an equipment upgrade, but also a complete sand and iron separation system, including onshore magnetic separation equipment. Its core power uses a 220KW industrial motor, which can significantly reduce the cost of a ton of sand by 50%.

2.Russian customer experience and solutions
2.1 Initial equipment performance
Customers use 8-inch suction sand pumping vessels in the tributaries of the Yenisei River:
Daily average sand extraction: 800m³ (water depth <5 meters loose sand layer)
Iron sand recovery rate: 72% (matching single-stage magnetic separator)
Main problem: No cutting function causes pebbles to block the pump body → 3 hours of cleaning is required every day
2.2 Challenges of deep-water operations
After advancing to the 12-meter deep area of the main river channel:
Geological conditions: basalt base + 20cm particle size gravel layer + high viscosity frozen soil clay
Equipment failure:
Sand pump impeller breaks within 48 hours
Sand discharge pipe is broken by pebbles
Magnetic separator loses more than 40% iron sand due to uneven feeding
2.3 Improvement plan for suction sand pumping vessels
Three key technical upgrades:
Problem points: pebble layer, clay mass Magnetic separation loss
Suction vessel defects: pump blockage, pipeline siltation, unstable recovery rate
Suction vessel solution:
⌀1200mm tungsten-cobalt alloy reamer cutting
24000N.M hydraulic torque + countercurrent cutter
Three-stage buffer box + electromagnetic feeding stabilization system
3.Equipment technical specifications
3.1 Hull structure
Three-body split design
Main hull size: 12m×3.2m×1.5m
Side buoy size: 19m×1.2m×1.5m (two sets)
Core configuration:
Transportation plan: Side buoy welded container corner parts, support full container transportation
Hull material: 8mm Q345B antifreeze steel plate (-50℃ impact toughness ≥27J)
Deck design: 5mm diamond convex anti-slip panel + snow melting agent guide groove
3.2 Power system economic comparison
220KW motor vs diesel engine (Russian electricity price 0.1 US dollars/KWh)
- Energy consumption cost for 2000 hours of operation per year:
Diesel engine: 220KW×0.26L/KWh×2000h×$1.2/L = $137,280
Electric motor: 220KW×2000h×$0.1/KWh = $44,000
- Annual maintenance cost:
Diesel engine: $15,000
Electric motor: $3,200
Annual comprehensive savings: $105,080
3.3 Reamer system parameters
Structural design:
12-spoke cross cutter head (anti-winding structure)
72 replaceable tungsten-cobalt alloy teeth (single tooth compressive strength 1850MPa)
Axial piston hydraulic motor (output torque 24,000N.M)
Measured performance:
In a clay layer containing 30% pebbles, the processing volume per hour is 42m³
3.4 Workflow and effect
Reamer crushing riverbed → 10-inch sand pump (1100m³/h) suction
DN250 wear-resistant pipe transport to 500m buffer box
Vibrating feeder evenly distributes to RCYD-12 three-stage magnetic separator
Output 62% grade iron ore → environmentally friendly backfill of tailings
Recovery rate: 91.7% (19.7 percentage points higher than the old system)
